I was very excited to have my friends take me to this wonderful place. The married team that runs it are enthusiastic about their food and energetic to, when the climate is quiet, discuss their menu in detail with you.
I had so many wonderful dishes that it is hard to pin point all of them…except one.
I was with some friends who are generally not as adventurous as I am. I like to order things I have not seen before and then hone in on what the restaurant excels in. I saw “Sichuan Triple Treasure” on the menu listed as “Beef tongue, tendon and tripe served chilled.” I am a real sucker for most offal, so I forced this dish upon them.
There was nearly none left to bring back left overs, which was our original intent (try a little and let the weirdo Tobias take it home). All of the meats were sliced paper thin and sauce bound it all together. As I write this, I am craving it. It is one of the best “new” Sichuan dishes I have had in a very long time.
Of course, the other dishes that we had were amazing stand out dishes. Of note was the Pork Belly with Rice Powder & Potatoes. This is also a must have. The Pork stuffed tofu is also wonderful. Not going to knock you over the head, but as part of a meal full of powerful dishes, this delicate dance of tofu and pork really rounds out a meal.
There are a few dishes on the menu that you need to call in advance to have served (e.g., Tea braised duck). I want to make a point to come back to Grace Garden for this duck and the Triple Treasure when I am back in the DC area.
I took a lot of pictures of the food and the menu when I last went. I have a Flickr set dedicated to Grace Garden including pictures of the food and images of their menus.
